Apple products are just easier...

A couple of friends noticed that I've become a bit more prolific regarding my blogging. They are right. I can thank Apple for my sudden burst of inspiration.

First, I bought one of the first original iPads. It changed my relationship with... well... all of the information in the world by making access to internet resources available and easy. The iPad is "always on". When I'm watching the news and something I don't understand is mentioned, I simply "google" it and I'm up to date. It's always with me. I find myself sitting in Starbucks, Panaras, McDonalds or one of the many other places with free wifi typing ideas.

When it came time to update my RIM Blackberry (I was an "early adaptor, and on my fifth or sixth one... lost count), I realized that the iPhone was just a small iPad (or perhaps the iPad is a big iPhone) and "switched". Good move. The iPhone, like the iPad, is just easier. I found myself blogging and responding to Facebook anytime any place. The interface is so much simpler than my last Blackberry (the Bold) that there's no comparison.

So, then I started looking at my Windows 7 laptop (a Dell Inspiron) and wondering what a Macbook Pro would be like. I waited for the release of the updated Macbook Pro (a couple of months ago) and bought the first one sold by Best Buy (the one near Potomac Mills). good move. Once again, everything is easier. No "blue screen of death" or "failures". Everything works all the time. It's also more portable and the battery life is excellent (starts at 10 hours and never runs out during a day's use).

Then, I integrated all three devices (plus my lonely Windows 7 Dell) using Mobile me, Apple's personal cloud. Now, when I update my calendar, contacts, or write an email the results are immediately, wirelessly and transparently updated on all four devices. No more "sync" required. I can also put pictures and documents in the "cloud" and share things with other people.

So, I'm off Windows and RIM and into Apple in a big way. The Macbook Pro is my primary tool. Its lighter, has better battery life and easier to handle, so I find myself typing anywhere instead of feeling locked into my office to do work. So I might finally finish my book (or books, depending on which I work on) and... yes... I'm blogging more.

It's ironic. I've been in technology since 1970. MY first personal computer was an Apple IIe. Along the way, I've owned all of the usual original computers (Heath-kit, Commodore, TI 99/4a et.al). I still wistfully remember programming in Basic on that IIe (moving up to Borland C later) as "Good times" and still have the sticker that came with it on my Army foot locker: "The Journey is the Reward" (with that original multi-colored Apple logo). For the record, I'm on my second iPod (although it doesn't get used as much these days... works great in my car).

I realize that I'm now "on the air all the time". I've always valued being connected; however, now I'm hyperconnected. I think that's neither good nor bad and merhaps a model for today's networked world. I have always been in the "information sharing" business on a mega-scale so this is a natural evolution for me. It may not be for everyone.

The Journey is the reward... and Apple makes the Journey so much easier.
